Default Knocking sound in steering

Hi

in my AU2 XR8 sedan, of late i noticed a knocking sound sometimes when steering, especially when turning at low speeds or parking.

I am sure i saw a thread on this a while back, but cant seem to find it.

Anyone able to give me an idea on what it is ?

Luke

I have the same problem, i assumed it was the rack, so that's going to be changed as i also have a shocking vibration when turning right which i was informed is no great deal (caused by air in the lines i think?), but the knocking is rather scary!

the vibration sounds like the rack or power steer pump

This is the Ford fix. It is depending on whether you are feeling a shudder at low speeds (air in the power steering pump) or a 'cracking' sound at parking/low speed turning (movement of the rack housing against the crossmember). The first instance is rectified by bleeding the power steering pump. (Make sure you don't have a leaking hose or fittings or this won't work). To do this you release the serpentine belt, with the engine cold preferably, then turn the pump by hand in the direction it normally rotates for at least two minutes. If you put a torch or lamp near the reservoir whilst you do this (with the cap off) you will be likely to see air bubbles irregularly rising in the oil. When the bubbles cease, refit the belt and start the engine then switch it off within a few seconds. Let it sit for a few minutes then restart/stop again. Wait again, then take the car into a vacant car park (if possible) and do 6-8 'figure 8' manouvres. GET THIS: If it still shudders 5-7 days later - you'll need a replacement high-pressure hose.
If its the second situation: needs Never-Seize grease between the rack and crossmember, making sure the alloy of the rack and crossmember are free of burrs and the nuts retensioned to 80Nm. Never fails to fix.
Sorry about the long answer.
Cheers.
