I'm having another problem with my 2000 au falcon AUTO. When doing a right turn from stationary, the car will initially pull away, attempt to change gear as the speed increases and just start revving as if it were in neutral. All power is lost. After ~2secs the transmission seems to 'engage' and the car pulls away normally. I'm guessing the transmission sometimes fails to reengage going from 1st to 2nd.
This only seems to happen on right hand turns and only occasionally. I'm guessing this is a sign of the inevitably impending doom - a failing transmission, correct? The car's almost done 200k km and has been regularly serviced. If it is the transmission, how much would I be up for, and would it be worth it (consider the cars got some paint damage and the interior is looking worse for wear). Sounds a bit like it needs a service, but my first thought would be LOW trans fluid.

Sorry to sort of high-jack the thread, but my 2000 AU Forte has never had a transmission service and its gone just under 300,000 all up. Its been there since the beginning. I do give it the occasional (maybe more the then occasional actually :P) thrash and its still acting like normal. Its unbelievable. Although, I am thinking of getting it serviced just to make sure it will last me a little longer or to see if it actually can be improved. Wish I could get it converted to a 5 sp. Manual!
On your troubles, yeah check the trans fluid, but if it turns out you just need to get a new box after closer inspection and maybe a service, I think its worth it. |

Either low fluid ... or one of the solenoids is playing up ... or check the elctrical connectors on the outside of the box ... uplug it ... and clean the connecters with WD40/RP7 or the like ... that can be another cause too.

The ford received a 200k km service a few weeks ago. Transmission gaskets, pans and hoses were replaced for leaks (as was the fluid).
Thus I'd be surprised if the problem anything to do with transmission fluid. Whats a solenoid? |

Definitely sounds like transmission oil level is slightly low. More pronounced when cold? When the car is turned the oil 'sloshes' away from the pickup momentarily - no oil, no drive. Chances are that the service was done with the transmission 'hot', so when refilling not quite enough was put in. The only other likely culprit is a dead auto - so I'd be checked the level as per specs first.

That's due to low auto trans oil. I had the same problem. Had it topped up and it was all fixed. The mechanic's excuse for it happening was "because we ran out of oil."

yup, had the same prob when i first got my wagon with only 85,000k's on it. seemed like it was slipping into neutral between 1st and 2nd. got the autotrans shop to look at it, low fluid and badly needed servicing. so take it to a specialist auto trans mechanic shop, ask them to check it out. they will have the neccessary equipment to check the trans computer and will also check the fluid levels properly. Ford have a tendancy to let their apprentices do the services, so a lot of the time they dont get done properly. well, thats my experiance anyway, maybe its just around here?

having had a rear servo leak in my trans I am pretty sure its low fluid. Mine would do exactly the same on a right hand uphill turn evry morning till i fixed the leak. It only took a litre of trans fluid too so all those big stains never amount to much loss but it does make a difference. save some cash buy a litre of ATF fluid a plastic hose and a 16mm thats right a god awful awkard size just to make it hard ring spanner.
