hi,
will the au xr6 98 model run fine with out the cat converter. Back in the XE days it was common practice to remove the cat converter giving you a tougher note and a noticable performance gain. is thgis still the case? |

I am yet to see an XE with a cat converter, they all used leaded fuel.

its illegal to remove (or gut out )a cat converter and will result in a ~$10,000 - ~$20,000 fine...... plus at best you'll gain a whopping 1-4 rwkw
just dont do it, it is there for a reason - to take the nasty cancerous crap out of the exhaust..... |

but will also land you a $20,000 fine if your caught without it... for what its worth, i'd suggest dont do it.. the standard cats are already fairly "high flow" or replace it with a bigger high flow cat? like 3inch or something.. |

Really not worth it!
Most people on the forums have broken a few road rules and regulations before I am sure they would not worry too much about legality as a major concern if it worked. It doesn't the stock AU cat is pretty good and replacing or emoving it isn't a worthwhie performance mod. Just ask Stiddy about a tough sound if you heard his XR6 on the dyno you will know what i mean it barks. |

there are plenty of other performance mods you can do to the 6 without worrying about the cat....
cam, intake pipe, exhaust, are just 3 |

Spose the good old days are gone forever. Intake sounds like a good starting point followed by exhaust. |

The reason why you didnt have cats back in your day is bacuse the fuel was different back then (leaded vs unleaded).
Removing cat means pumping out dangerous chemicals for everyone else to breath and risking potentially huge fines all for the sake of a power gain/exhaust note change that you will bearly notice.

i know of cars making some very decent power with the stock cat in place, extractors, exhaust, cam and intake mods, and the cat is still not a restriction...
really its only when you start getting into the realms of supercharger/turbo setups that the cat is a restriction i think.... |

The cat on an AU has almost ZERO impact on rwkw, they are extremely overengineered for the I6. Taking it off will be more trouble than its worth and cost you about the same as a decent intake setup (and the intake would probably be more effective).
Also, any reference to gutting your cat or removing it (unless you are living in NZ) will see your posts removed on the subject.

Your better bet would be to put a 3" pipe with hi flow filter & good sports exhaust system. Then down the track look at the engine & chip mod.

You can have my standard cat ... it's actually gutting itself at the moment.
I'll be getting a new one soon with some nice extractors .... hee hee
