Default Vfacts December 2024

Ranger #1 for the second year running.

https://www.drive.com.au/news/austra...2024-december/

*Toyota #1 overall again.
*Prado back on top but Everest surprisingly a close second.
*F150 #1 in December comfortably from Ram and Silverado.
*Mustang #1 sports car for 2024 despite having nothing to sell for most of the year…

But the biggest surprise for me in December is Patrol outselling the L300 Cruiser. From what I understand the Cruiser ain’t what it once was!

By what I have read etc, Toyota is no the pillar of reliability that it once was.
I know Mercedes Benz had a huge fall in the JD Power reliability rankings and a new CEO has said he wil change that.

Ford – Up 12,370 deliveries (14.1 per cent) to 100,170

"The Ranger became the first Ford to take consecutive annual sales wins since the EB/ED Falcon in 1992 and 1993, though it wasn’t the reason why the brand recorded a delivery increase in 2024.

That instead was due to the Ford Everest, of which 11,423 more examples were delivered in 2024 compared to the year prior, effectively leading the brand’s charge past Mazda on the overall sales charts.

Such was the popularity of the Everest that its deliveries climbed by almost 76 per cent, with some buyers believed to be those unwilling to wait for the new Toyota Prado but willing to spend extra over the similar Isuzu MU-X.

The Everest’s popularity offset a drop in deliveries for the Escape (axed), Puma (axed), Mustang coupe (delayed launch) and even the Ranger, though the latter could be attributed to the sheer volume of its first full year on sale in 2023."

Tesla - Deliveries were down by 7769 units to 38,347, a decline of 16.9 per cent.

"Electric vehicle (EV) brand Tesla went from the market’s biggest sales winner in 2023 to its biggest loser in 2024.

Despite the rollout of an updated Model 3 at the beginning of this year, sales of the mid-sized sedan were down by 1.5 per cent.

What really dragged down Tesla sales, however, was the Model Y. An updated model is expected sometime this year and many buyers are believed to be holding out for it, which goes some way towards explaining why sales slumped this year by 26.1 per cent.

That slump came despite Tesla cutting prices of its vehicles multiple times early in 2024."

Lots of MG4s being sold as well, I think its the best value EV on the market, two of our AFF members picked one up in the current sale price.

Not quite.......................

MG -

"MG deliveries slumped by 13.3 per cent, with its overall tally of 50,592 down 7754 units on the previous year.

This was the first year MG deliveries have dropped since it relaunched under Chinese ownership in 2017.

The company launched replacements for its core MG 3, ZS and HS models during 2024, and nameplates can often experience sales drops amid the changeover to a new generation.

However, MG launched its new MG 3 in June and promised enough stock of the old model to last into December; likewise, there was stock of old HS and ZS models even as new ones reached dealers.

This wasn’t enough to stop MG 3 deliveries from dropping by 18.6 per cent or 2867 units to 12,563, ZS sales by 22.7 per cent or 6629 units to 22,629, and HS sales by 44 per cent or 3574 units to 4552.

An impressive year for the MG 4 wasn’t enough to offset these declines. The electric hatchback was up by 121.3 per cent, with an extra 3800 deliveries bringing 2024’s tally to 6934 units.

MG 5 deliveries also increased by 1473 units to 3871, a 61.4 per cent increase over 2023."

Supply.
Unless you want a GX model, it's a long wait for a 300 series.

MG4 did well though, I think that's where Chinese car manufacturers are going to shine is with 'new energy vehicles' (not sure why they call it 'new energy') given electricity has been known about since the 1700s and electric cars predate internal combustion engines

It's amazing to think that a brand that has something to offer in literally every niche of the market could come first by such a margin.

You missed this point. 2024 finished with 5 months of consecutive declines and 6 of the last 7 months were below their 2023 numbers.

2025 will not be a new record year

I wonder how Ford will be effected by the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) this year. Probably won't see full effects till second half.

"Weber also warned that buyer preferences do not align with new government emissions mandates, which will financially penalise car makers if they sell too many higher-emitting vehicles.

“The industry is responding to NVES by increasing the range of zero and low emission vehicles on offer”, he said.

“However, a continuation of current customer buying preferences will inevitably lead to the accrual of substantial penalties under the Government’s new scheme, which will create price inflation within the new vehicle market”."

I think it's going to effect Ford Australia because the vast majority of their sales come from Everest and Ranger, unless they managed to negotiate their vehicles scoring exemptions under the NVES criteria.

It'll push prices of Ranger and Everest higher if they don't absorb the costs, the only question is how much is the market willing to pay for these vehicles? Prices are higher than ever so maybe they won't have issues with Ranger pushing into 6 figures.

Customers will probably still buy it's just a question of affording the finance payments, and that's half the cost of living issues because people keeping up with the jonses instead of buying shit with their own money and owning things outright.

Does it matter if Ranger costs $120,000 when it's only $XXX/week?

Raptor excluded, not very much vehicle for so much money, even at current prices. They must reach a ceiling before people simply refuse to buy them.

Talking to a couple of guys at work. One with a new Raptor financed 96k ($108k less $12k trade) at $375/week over 7 years. Works out to be about $150k all up.

Another one financed a Haval at $190/week for 5 years. Unsure if he put down a deposit or trade but FMD, forking out at least $50k for a Haval.

Like most Toyota owners, I'm guessing your daughter/son in-law don't freely admit to their "unbreakable" Toyota having problems. Yes, Toyota's are more reliable than most, but I don't think its as legendary as Toyota and its customers would have you believe.

As for the 300-series V6 burning oil, wasn't the 200-series V8 known for liking a thirst for oil too?

A mates Father in Law had a Auto Club Depot and Workshop in a Country Town.
My mate said Toyotas were a bit more reliable.
Toyota parts were generally more expensive than GMH, Ford, Mitsubishi etc.

Toyota owners…..I will never understand them!
I've also found most Toyota owners believe that white paint makes the car safer.

Not all types of vehicles sold by a manufacturer must conform to the same target. Heavier passenger cars – or utes, vans and 4x4s considered to be light-commercial vehicles – are allowed to hit less stringent limits than smaller, lighter hatchbacks and family SUVs.

Correct.
One of the biggest issues for modern diesels is the amount of short distances people do commuting,
a hybrid makes far more sense in this situation, no regen issues and petrol usually cheaper than diesel.
It’s the reason why RAV4 is now so popular, hybrid and petrol versions are a winning combination

yep hybrid way to go for the many looking to reduce their running costs - right move.

Hey you guys with your pet toy angst lol - every brand is not as it once was long long ago.
Being #1 for so so long always puts the bulls eye on the back.
They have All cut costs, times have changed fellas, people have loyalty despite the issues.
Ask AMG MB owners over the last 10yrs or so, many a engine has been replaced hush hushed for eg but no owner will admit it and I get that for they spend far more than poultry volume dailys.
Ask Audi owners when did their box get replaced.
I'm sure Toy isn't bothered after all it keeps punching up the overall numbers.

Anyway good on the Blue Oval doing a ok, Everest many on the road now.
At least these sales figures have offset cutting back on the Escape and Puma ?!
Why Puma cut whilst Yaris/corrolla cross examples keep selling amongst other brand/models keep kicking on.
