My ancient but beloved AU obviously has an ECU, but do modern cars still have this component?
Would my friends' 2014 Mazda still have one or has the technology now been superseded ?

No. Unless you are trying to reset learning functions. The ecu is a generic term like pc. They are improving the whole time. Better emissions and power etc

all modern engines are computer controlled. In fact all modern cars have an interlinked network of electronic modules controlling everything from the engine to the door glass. They all talk to each other, and there's no knowing what you can affect. We took the rear seats out of a car the other day, and the boot latch stopped working!
