I have searched the forums to answer this question, but couldn't find anything.
To get better sound am I better off to keep the factory head unit (single cd) and change speakers or change headunit and keep original speakers? Would be looking at changing speaks in the future. Thanks, Hoich

Not sure, but I'll probably install decent speakers to replace the factory ones I've blown as I'm sure they're easier & cheaper to change than the head unit, and get a head unit further down the track installed professionally.
I guess its up to you, the factory head unit in mine seems to put out some decent quality, pity the speakers let it down by buzzing and popping!

factory head unit is crap, as are the factory speakers. And personally, I wouldn't pay someone else to do the installation

If you wanted to keep it original maybe you could just change the speakers and maybe run a amp of the standard deck if you can, I have no idea with the standard deck and amplifiers.

I have tried running an alpine amp off the standard head but it just dosn't work. My suggestion is to get a reasonable Pioneer head ($300 to $500) and then the best speakers you can afford. I saw some 3 way alpine speakers from an alpine dealer 5 X 7's for $129 that would be perfect for the front doors. Get some Pioneer 6 X 9's 3 way or 4 way ($88 from Strathfield car radio) for the rear. When you can afford it but a good 4 channel amp and a 12 inch sub and you will have a great sound system. Stick to the name brands like Pioneer or Alpine and you can't go wrong.

I did the above to my car and it cost:
$300 for a pioneer head (on special from $599 $25 for the din tray under the head $300 for alpine splits for the front $120 for pioneer 6X9 for the rear $200 for a 4 channel alpine amp $200 for a 12 inch pioneer sub in a box $0 for install because I did it. I have a great sound system in my car |

I didnt have to mod anything. Although I did scratch my tint on the drivers window the first time so I had to adjust that one and now its fine. The pasenger side didnt scratch the window at all though. You do have to get it in the exact right spot though

Sorry to hijack but how do you get 6x9's in the back without screwing them in from underneath? And does anyone know where to buy an 8inch air-sub that would screw into the factory hole under the parcel tray?

All AU front door speakers are 5x7. All wagon rear speakers are 4" round. All AU sedan rear speakers are 5x7, but you can use 6X9s if bolted from under the parcel tray (you cannot legally cut the metal of the parcel shelf, so there is no way to fit a 6X9 without using a spacer, and they just look ugly IMO). Oh, and you can fit 6" splits or 3 ways in the 5X7 holes easily.

You can also fit 6.5" splits in the front (but not recommended).

i just changed to new JL audio 5x7 220 watt 2ohm speaker all round(have gas tank cant fit 6x9's) with the stock headunit it made a huge difference! id like to amp them though. Its easy to do yourself accept needing a tiny socket for those bloody security screws!!!

Thanks for the replies guys.
I will look at buying some speakers over the weekend. 2 questions: How easy are the speakers to install? How to remove door trims and parcel tray? Thanks, Hoich

for the rears, just pop the egg shaped covers off, and you need a small socket to undo the "tamper proof" bolts that hold the speakers in. I think its arond 6.5mm socket but am probably wrong. Fronts, theres a couple of screws at the bottom of the trim, 1 or 2 on the side, pop out the pannel that the power window switches are in, theres either a bolt or screw behind there you need to undo. The plastic cup around the door handle also needs to be popped out and there will be a screw or a bolt behind it. Use a pair of multi grips or something to pull the door lock indicater (drivers side only) off, and theres a round thing on the door skin about the size of a 20cent coin which needs to be popped off because, you guessed it, its hiding another screw or bolt ( I cant remember whats were). after all this just pull the trim off and the rest is pretty straight forward.

do a search on door trim removal/removing. you should get a few hits.
Saved you the trouble - here's one I prepared earlier (includes a list of 5x7 speakers, too) http://www.fordforums.com.au/showpos...87&postcount=3

How do you guys go about getting rid of the vibrations from the mirrors, dash etc...? I was going to put 6x9s in the back but didn't want them screwed in from underneath cus the cone was covered by the parcel tray. The 5x7s in there now are really decent though. The VT's were 6x9 stock, why not AU's...? Just another reason to go all out on a new system! |
