Default Car Audio installer pay rates?

A friend of mine is working at a Sydney Car Audio joint as an installer, he has been there for a few years and is earning around $17.00 - $18.00 an hour. Is this on par with what installers are making or should he be on a higher wage? I Thought it seemed a little low.

$35-36k p.a. is probably about right for the base wage employers can set for age. He could try http://www.industrialrelations.nsw.g...s/default.html to try and work out what the minimum they can pay for the position.

Yeah but you don't get the downtime at maccas. Upgrade yourself to an ICP, better money for basically the same job. Just remember you get shift allowance, fatigue, awesome salary sacrifice benefits and lotsa holidays.
What state you in, mate?

Personally, I wouldn't bother turning up to work for less than $30/hr with full holidays, sick pay, super etc etc etc.

Sorry to say it, but stereo installer is about as low as it goes when it comes to fiddling with anything electronic... I should know, i'm a qualified electronics engineer!

Theres a lot of crap paying jobs out there. 2 examples here...

In QLD the average pay amounts for an over 21yr old casual Traffic Controller is just under $18 an hour. Less if they are put on permanant part time.
And thats a darn dangerous job, espicially on the motorways.

In the security Industry non armed guards will get 20 to 21 per hour on wages (casual) if they are lucky. On sub Contract, the rate varies between 15 per hr and 19 per hr. And you have to pay your own taxes on sub. Theres virtually no such thing as permanent part time in this industry, its mainly all casual or Sub Contract.
25per hr is good pay for armed guards or dog handellers, and is also more dangerous work. Guns are allways a soft target for theft on Guards, and with dogs, if you let your dog go onto someone, you better have an iron clad proovable reason for doing it that will hold up in court.

Those are 2 industries I have business dealings with up here in QLD.

Both these industries are at the bottom of the food chain work wise, like the retail industry, non qualified tradies, lackies, sterio fitters etc.

Heres the funny thing though....Traffic Control, you have to pass a Course to get a ticket to do it, and Pass an OH&S course also, plus at least 1 specialist sinage course. And depending on if you want to advance later to supervise/set up jobs etc there are 2 other sinage courses to complete and pass first.
And all of these are now not just sign the papers and you have it, but are administered and monitored officially, and you must pass compatency in all areas.

Security also needs a course, and they have clamped down on those a little over the last year or so, you need xtra courses if you want to do armed work, guard dogs, escort etc etc. So, technically these 2 examples are specialised jobs with crap minimum wages and conditions.

670 in the hand + car + petrol+ Commission.

Commission can be anything average of 1500.00 to 2000.00 per month in the hand.
and with lots of kids its never enough.
