Default Hit and Run

Look what some (insert expletive) did to our car at the weekend…..[IMG][/IMG]
Did they leave contact details? No, but someone left a note with the number plate details. Went to report it to the police and was told as it happened in the Local Shopping Center Carpark it was on private property and they wont be doing anything about it. The insurance co wont chase them unless we make a claim. If we claim it from them we will have to pay excess and loose our no claims. Its just not worth it. Fortunately we are doing some work for a panel beaters who will be fixing the car up next week. But it annoys me that we can do nothing about the (insert worse expletive) who did it. Anyone know a way to trace an owner from the no plate? Tried Revs but you need a Vin no. Anyone around Rockingham W.A. look out for a white car or ute with plate no 1CMI898

Can't you just rock up to the local post-office or AA and pay $2 to get the details of the registered owner?

Thats what I did, and boy were they unhappy to see me

Just make a claim with your insurance company and pay your excess. Give them the number plate details and they can chase them up. If the can find them, then you'll get you excess back and no hit on your no claim bonus.

If the people who left a note also left their details, your insurance should be fine. If they simply left a note, then theres no witness to verify the note wasnt left by the actual culprit, and the plate number given an uninvolved car they noticed leaving.

mate i feel for you, these people should be hung by the nuts i reckon!
My Mrs just had the worst experience, she had her rear quarter repaired after some dumb mole rode her bike into the side of it flat knacker, My Mrs made a claim and had to pay excess.. long story.
Anyway....the day after she got the car back from the panel shop someone sideswiped her in the car park in the exact same spot.... both of us were angry :(
A week later a van or something white touched the front up, broke a head light and dented the quarter panel.
Both times no one bothered to leave a note.

It makes me sick!

Had a similar occurance a few years ago with my XR8. Came back to the car to have my son point out what some ignorant elderly lady had done with her door. "By the way Dad, here's the rego of the old ladies car!" God bless his cotton socks. Never having had anything like this happen before, was straight onto the local coppers. Upshot was that they could not charge her with leaving the scene of an accident, but would persue a charge of 'Malicious Damage' if she did not provide her details to me for the insurance company. Lady copper said she would contact culprit and have her call me or else. 5 minutes later, a very apologetic woman on the phone providing her details. Cost to me apart from huge agro and time.....nil. Cost to her, lots as the repairer didn't hold back on his pricing.

Don'y let the @#@& get away with it!

Cheers

This $#!t is more of an occurence these days with people doing runners. Its happened to me 3 times, my brother around 5 times and my girlfriend once. My girlfriend was lucky there was a witness who actually reported it to the police aswell.

The worst thing is that most people getaway with it.

Yea thanks Mr Toasty. We know the people fixing it and know it will be done well. The people that left the number plate details never left their own details so no witness that we could use. There is a lot of building going on near the area it happened and we think it was probably a tradies ute. Might just pop round there in the mini and see if theres anyone working there with burgandy paint on their tray. Not that I could realy do much anyway. Yes Shannons (our insurance co) would chase the person who did it if we make a claim. But if they deniyed anything (as they probably would) theres not much we could do and it would end up costing us more in the long run. Just lucky the Panel shop fixing it, owes us at the moment.

I had the same thing happen about a month after I purchased my ute, but no one saw anything and there was certainly no note left. It looked like a 4wd with a very large bullbar tried to get into the park next to me and ran up the side of the ute from just behind the fuel cap to the front(side) indicator, then backed out the same way. The insurance company said that because i wasnt driving at the time I just had to pay the normal excess which was about $400, not the under 25 excess as well, and there was no affect on my policy at all.

If you can find out the details of the other vehicles owner you won't even have to pay the excess. Thats what happened when one of the local ferals ran into the front of my old ute.

Sorry to see this Poorboy. I know how you feel about your cars and this must be gutting. You never know, maybe karma will come around and the idiot who did this to you will die of dysentry. That would be fair.

Will also pay to have a chat with the Shopping Centre sercurity, they may have cameras in the area, possibly covering your car. Worked for my dad a few years ago after a delivery van backed into his parked car and bolted.

Police wont seem to do anything that doesn't net them an income. In NSW it used to be that if public drive on it, it is a public thorofare. Road rules apply. Don't know if Bob Carr changed it tho.
I had a bingle, and the coppers said if they didn't see it we are all liars. Drivers cant tell the truth. And they ask us to respect them. I dunno. Maybe they want to be polititians.

So the police won't pursue a hit and run inside a shopping centre carpark?
And yet they can defect my mate inside a shopping centre carpark eating hungry jacks.
We were doing nothing wrong, didn't have music blaring or anything. Just a small group of 3 cars minding our own business and this police car pulled up next to us and asked to see my mates license.
Meanwhile the lady police officer was walking around the car and defected his VR for being too low and for having a bald spare tire. It was standard height, no mods, no mags, hubcaps, original radio/cassette. He'd just got the car from his parents that week.
They had a look at my Ute, asked if all my lights work, horn, tires. etc. Nothing wrong, left me alone (My Ute is lowered and has a 5 poster bullbar and twin zorst) and checked over my other mates defectable looking Pulsar and told him to replace one tire.

Why would they leave my ute and my mates pulsar and defect my mates parents old totally standard car. Is it because it's a Commodore? is it because we were a group of 3 vehicles, one being a Commodore sitting in a group looking like a target?
Were the coppers having a bad day or perhaps a car looking like my mates had been reported for hooning or something? which for the time that i was with him that afternoon there had been none of. (Can't say for any other time)

It annoys me. There seem to be 2 lawbooks.

My mates parents took the car to the Holden Hill Police Station and had the car off defect soon after.

Can you be defected for a bald spare tire? He carries an empty coke can in his car all the time now by the way (to prove he's not too low)

A numberplate is fine, but there needs to be a witness who saw it actually happen to be able to back it up and prove it. You say someone left the rego number that saw it....How do you know it was not the culprit actually doing the rights thing?

Go to your local traffic authority, pay the amount for the rego search and send a letter of demand to them. Or as others have said go through your insurance, pay the excess (which will be a standard excess as age excess does not apply if you were not driving at the time) If a recovery can be made you will get your excess back. Most standard excesses are going to be less than the cost of repairing that anyway.

We will be trying to find the owner of the car that hit us for sure. Thanks for the suggestions. Have had simular experiences with police XHUTE6 but with one who liked Holdens not Fords. But dont want to get into cop bashing as they do come in useful at times. At least the car will be fixed before Christmas ans no one was hurt. It could have been a lot worse.

This happened to us and someone left a note with the rego. We paid a fee from the cops (who love their income obviously) to get the details of the other party and left it with the insurance company. No loss of No Claims and no excess.

I figure if they have damage and your paint on the car they are guilty and the big insurance company can make them pay up. Good luck with it.

My sister used to have to park in train station car park everyday to go to work. I had to pull the bumpers off and straighten or replace mounts on average every 3 to 4 weeks. Occasionally a bit of panel beating required too. Only a little Barina but very frustrating.

At least it wasn't the coupe, small mercies.

Just file a claim against the car and the insurance company
will find the driver for you.
You will not lose your NCB it was their fault cos they hit you.

Tell the cops to get their rear end out of the chair,
if you were to do a burn out in a shopping centre car park
you will get charge by the cops but if someone hit & run in the car park,
all of a sudden the car park becomes a private property???

May sure you write down the police officer who told you that it is a private
property. The last time i heard from the supreme court stated that as long
as a place like westfield where there is access to the general public it is not
classified as a private property.

I wouldn't. I hate leaving the F6 on a street let alone a train station. Young girl coming off a train late at night though, the less distance walked the better. And it was only a barina.

Don't want to cop bash. the majority of them are decent hard working blokes who are just doing their job.. although i think some of them like their job a little too much.

Off topic but.
Personally I think all this hyped up Holden, Ford hate stuff is really silly (more so whan it comes from the cops) I drive, own, and like Fords but can also appriciate a nice Holden. Pulled up next to an SLR torana at a filling station in the XC coupe. Was thinking thats one really nice car when the bloke that owned it came out from paying for petrol. He made a real point of not making eye contact with me or the car, to the extent that he was walking sideways towards his car. Just made me laugh.
Would be a lot more upset to find an unexplained dent in the XC.

Just out of interest phoned the W.A. licencing office up. Freedom of information dictates that we cannot get the owner details of the person that hit us from their number plate. Not too surprised, and in a way not too upset as I wouldnt want someone to be able to find out where our cars are parked from the number plates. With all the classic cars getting knicked here in WA recently I would rather pay a grand to get our car fixed than have some low life pinch our XC. A guy turned up at the drags the other day in a GTHO and flatly refused to fill out the adress part of his entry form. Dont blame him really. They did still allow him to race.
