Any of the older suburbs, especially up north.
The blocks are bigger, and more importantly you are unable to put your hand out of your window and touch your nextdoor neighbours hand.

I lived in Kanahooka in an area called Forrest Grove, or as the residents used to call it, Faulty Grove : Small houses, tiny blocks but pretty good. That probabbly would be the only place in that area I would choose to live. North like you said, is better. Apart from Kiama

Lived in Gwynneville, then Keiraville for a year each. All good. Northern suburbs are pretty decent I would say. I have a some friends in Coniston and Mangerton as well and they seem to be pretty happy with that too.

Plenty of small time break-ins, especially to cars around the North 'gong area. Well that was the case in the early noughties when I was there.

If I didn't have to work in Sydney I wouldn't hesitate going back.

Also, I hear some areas around Lake Illawarra, especially the north side can be a bit dodgy (no evidence though). Port Kembla used to be a bit dodgy but it looks like they are really trying to clean it up.

Fairy meadow is OK (Poofters Paddock) East Corimal has a nice beach but lots of housing commision types just don't move to Port kembla or around the steel works (can't think of the suburb) all the rest are ok Just check how close to the scarpe they are as some get dark at 4pm in winter
I love the 'Gong' wish i was still there
