"If you’re looking to buy a used car, researching its safety rating could mean the difference between life and death.
The 2015 car safety ratings were announced today and many popular models were not considered ‘up to scratch’. Fortunately the ratings show you don’t need to spend more to get a safe car. NRMA spokesman Jack Haley said the findings were based on more than seven million car crashes across Australia and New Zealand. “They're very well statistically based as to how well a vehicle will protect you and other road users in a crash,” he told Seven News. The Holden Cruze gained a five star safety rating compared to the two star Mitsubishi Lancer. And the ratings lived up to a crash test. While both the Cruze and the Lancer ended up dented, the interior of the Cruze fared much better than the Lancer, which was trashed. The Kia Rio, Nissan Pulsar, Hyundai Accent and Subaru Impreza all scored one star safety ratings for small cars. The Hyundai Sonata and Mitsubishi Magna were considered the least safe larger cars. "The ratings are essential reading for those shopping for a second-hand car... more than 200 models are listed.. and one in three is classes as poor.. or very poor,” Mr Haley said. "You're six times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in the worst car than you are in the best car." NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay said the safety rating allowed second hand buyers and parents looking for cars for their children to be able to pick the safest possible. Details on where to find the latest car safety ratings can be found here and you can find the full list of cars here." https://au.news.yahoo.com/a/29408354...up-to-scratch/

If anyone wants to have a look at the PDF.
http://www.raa.com.au/documents/used...y-ratings-2015 Funny that the VE (Sedan) is as safe the the B-series. Yet the FG is as safe as a BMW 5 series. Territory is top of the list. As are all the new Fords.

interesting that EL/AU went from 2 stars straight to 4 stars ba onward according to this.
yet the AU 2 sedan was ancap rated at 3 stars , the Au ute was rated 4 stars , in fact the sedan cabin looked to fare a little better to me, unless i missed something. im thinking the listing may have been on actual crashes , but you have to wonder what where the statistics and circumstances of the crashes in this list, obviously a car that is predominately in the burbs and has low speed crashes is going to look better than a vehicle that is popular and often in a higher speed area that has bigger crashes, im just wondering if the statistics could be swayed/skewed a bit even by the popularity of the vehicle that would effect injury numbers ??? the el/au for example they made a lot of them and there where plenty of country cars that would have been in a lot of higher speed country road stacks ? or am i barking up the wrong tree ? |

Best look at the list.
As the story does not elude to fact they seem to compare a 2009 Cruz with a 93 impreza or 96 Lancer. Is a $20,000 second habd car safer than a $1,500...umm I don't need to see crash test data to give me the answer. I am surprised that the story does not read Holden receive 5 star safety rating while VW only gets 3 stars. |

What a dumb story.
"The Kia Rio, Nissan Pulsar, Hyundai Accent and Subaru Impreza all scored one star safety ratings for small cars." Would help if they said what year these cars were from. To me it reads every single Subaru Impreza is a 1 star rating which is garbage.

But as with all these things, it's not meant as a bible.....but it's certainly more reliable then ancap stars.....as the numbers prove over and over I'd trust real world results then lab testing every day..... |

My G6E right at the top. \o/
Cruze might be safe, but I know a couple people with one, and they all swear never again. They would like a car that can go up a hill next time. |

I drive a cruze work car everyday, I like the (sedan) styling, interior and its reasonably economical. It is NOT and never will tick the reliability box, we have 3 of them and 2 inc mine have lunched their transmission, plus plenty of other time spent in the workshop under warranty.

The title of this thread "The Safest Car in Australia..Ratings..Number 1 is the Cruze...." is misleading.
The lists for each rating are in alphabetical order with the Small cars listed first. Which is why the Holden Cruze came first. Last edited by Silver Ghia; 02-09-2015 at 06:40 PM. |

The journo says the subi impeza scores only one point, but if you look at the data set the impeza scores 5 stars and is tagged as a safe choice.

For years the NRMA rated XE-XH vans as the safest commercial vehicles, yet Falcon utes were way down the list, essentially the same vehicles, but often driven by different types of drivers, vans often just plod along full of tools, utes are often driven much harder and faster and have more severe accidents. Its not the car that is unsafe, it's the type of driver that it attracts.

Read the description of "Safe Pick", what a load of bollocks!
"Only vehicles which provide excellent protection to their own driver, cause less serious injury to other drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists in a collision and are fitted with ESC achieve a Safe Pick rating. ESC helps avoid a crash and can reduce the severity of the crash if it cannot be avoided." |

07 Kluger gets top rating, Top Pick, yet Wheels found the ESC was so badly set up it caused the car to roll during a road test. "bollocks" I say

A better report to draw inferences from the original report titled "MONASH UNIVERSITY ACCIDENT RESEARCH CENTRE", VEHICLE SAFETY RATINGS ESTIMATED FROM POLICE REPORTED CRASH DATA: 2015 UPDATE AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND CRASHES DURING 1987-2013
"It uses real world accident data to "This study describes the calculation of updated ratings that measure the relative safety of vehicles in preventing severe injury to people involved in crashes. Three different aspects of secondary safety are examined: crashworthiness which focuses on drivers of the rated vehicle, aggressivity which focuses on drivers of other vehicles and unprotected road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists colliding with the rated vehicle and total secondary safety which examines the combined crashworthiness and aggressivity performance of the rated vehicle" The summary table starts a p245. The Ford Territory does exceptionally well. But, I am surprised at the rating for the Kluger, considering how poor its ESC has been set up in the past. http://monash.edu/miri/research/reports/muarc326.pdf |

Agree, it scored almost the same as BF, FG was quite a long way ahead... and is still ahead (albeit marginally) of VF. Its only the dicky scoring system for gadgets that makes them look equivalent. There's no doubting the quality of Ford's design department....

You would think that the tree trunks for A-pillars would have made it safer in the real world. I remember when FG came out its safety rating was better then lots of Euro's. So its good to see in the real world it holds up.

Does ANCAP do any rollover crash tests? Are the big A-pillars for roof rigidity?

My car has 4 stars. Im pretty happy with that. Sure I could get a 5 star rated vehicle tomorrow but that does not guarantee me or my passengers 100% life safety. There are many variables that come into play in an accident and throwing a blanket response that a 5 star rated car will guarantee to save your life or your loved ones life better than a 4 star car in the event of the same accident is speculative at best.
Anyone who claims to think that way or push their agenda to prove that point is doing so for the sake of being argumentative and rouse up drama.

Maybe the Cruise has grown some in the last few years but I find it hard to see it in the small car category. Medium yes, small no.
