no one has mentioned the option of getting your wheel revamped to your own design, i don`t know of any off hand but i`m sure there must be someone that would do it.

I don't think you can. They seem to have primarily come along when the BA was released, doing the XR Sports/GT wheel and have since done a similar wheel that fits E series and AU's, but without much choice. When brand new is the best time to get the colour changed if you want, as oils from your hands haven't gotten into the leather yet.

I managed to find a new (old stock) EL GT Momo woodgrain and leather steering wheel on ebay from the same seller that urbancowboy pointed out. Was a bit expensive but was a massive improvement on the old fairlane wheel and the airbag and radio/cruise controls all fit without any problems. He was great to deal with as well.

No offense right, but that Auto-Tek wheel looks like crud, I never spotted them when i was looking to get a new wheel, but im glad i got the MoMo wheel, It looks great, feels great, is not an issue on a long drive, longest stint ove done is about 4hours and it was great!

Topic of price from Ford, I work for Ford spare parts and my Staff price for a new MoMo wheel was about $1700! about two months ago, that's why i bought this one from ebay.

Well, no offence taken but I was talking about comfort on long drives.

I call a long drive something like 5000+ kms in a week.

In any event, it all gets down to personal preferences. I take it you've never driven with the autotek wheel? Well I haven't driven with the momo either.

It's all good. We can choose what we buy and what we don't

Forget buying 2 - how about 3!? Fact is, I've had both Momo and Autotek wheels (have you - doubt it!). In fact here's the list of wheels I've had for AUs:

Standard vinyl wheel - Yuck (too thin)
Standard perforated XR wheel - Nice; chunkier and good for my big hands, not as good as Momo; came with the Red XR8.
Red Momo wheel; very nice, and had it in 2 of my cars (blue AU XR6 then red AU XR8)
Metallic blue Momo wheel - as above, just different colour; had it in 2 different cars (AU2 V8 and Blue XR)
Electric blue Momo wheel with ESS buttons (not operational though); as above, and only had it in the one car (Forte/XR style wagon)
Woodgrain/El GT Momo wheel; as above, nice and chunky, and well shaped - a good wheel, and glad I only paid $200 for it brand new (list price was $1100)
AutoTek silver insert wheel; I've had 3 of these in 4 different cars. Best wheel ever. Chunkier than Momo, better rim shape than Momo, but not as "stylish" as Momo. Still a better overall steering wheel.

I think the above may qualify me to comment on which wheel is not only best for me, but the best wheel for anyone with an AU. However, if you don't like holding a big chunky, comfortable wheel,, or you're a "brand snob" then the Autotek wheel is not for you, but the Momo would be nearly as chunky. Brand isn't everything, but yes, the Momo is still better than stock.

A little birdie told me you purchased an Autotek wheel from Zhodak - please let us know what you think of it once fitted etc - I guarantee you'll love it, but I don't want to prejudice your thoughts (much!!).

Vic - 2 questions. 1. Where did you get the wheel for your BA and how much (the original woodgrain one you had for it). 2. Where did you get the other wheel re-covered and how much? Am interested in doing one of these options for the Terry.

Yep sure did JC! I haven't even got it yet and I think I already love it! Big thanks to GK for the thread dig. My current perforated xr6 wheel is cracking up ever so slightly so I thought it was time to upgrade. I've been looking at the autotek wheels for years now but never really wanted to invest the money. I'm really excited for this mod and will let you know my more "experienced" opinion once it's in!

That's a lot of steering wheels! I don't think anybody was disagreeing with the Autotek wheel being the most comfortable, just that it doesn't look as good or suit the AU as well as the Momo.

I personally think the Momo is the best of both worlds; it may not be quite as comfortable as the Autotek but it is just a great looking wheel that doesn't look cheap, generic and off the shelf like the rest (in my opinion of course).

I suppose this could be an endless debate... On steering wheels of all things!

I got my original Autotek chunky wheel from Bayfords on Ebay, they may still be around every now and then.

Cost to recover was $260 by some trimmers in Fyshwick who sent it to Perth. Was not too cheap but I had had the wheel for a while so the original purchase cost was forgotten and it was cheaper than buying another all leather wheel.

If you were going to do it all at once, I would buy one of those other Autotek wheels, either from that site or on Ebay.

I Guarantee you'll like it once received (just waiting on PM to confirm that payment has been deposited ). I bought the wheel for my AU1 XR6 Ute and then put on my AUII Ghia. I took it off the Ghia incase I bought an AU ute again, but I got the courier instead.

I was just saying it aint a pretty wheel! No i've never had a AutoTek wheel but the MoMo is fantastic imo! I have done some higher K's in my XR8 but not as many as you might have, I was saying my MoMo is super comfy, I personally love the extra chunks it has to grip on at different amounts of rotation of the steering wheel. Not a Brand snob although Brands are usually the better quality items! I went for the MoMo wheel brand new off ebay because my XR8 was optioned with one from new and mine was/is on its way to the grave, i didnt want the inconveinience of having my car off the road while the wheel was retrimmed, however i will keep my old one for when i sell my XR8 they can have the old wheel and i can keep my New MoMo ofr my next ride.
