Ford is proud to announce that as of April 1, 2009 production, six speed automatic FG Falcon XT sedan will break into the single digit fuel economy figure with an outstanding rating of 9.9 L/100km*.
This will mean the fantastic new fuel economy of the FG Falcon XT sedan will be equal to a Toyota Camry 4 Cylinder automatic thereby offering six-cylinder performance with 4-cylinder fuel efficiency. The FG Falcon XT sedan is also exceptional in its CO2 emissions where it receives a rating of 5.5 out of 10 accreditation in the Australian Government's Green Vehicle Guide for reaching the category standard of 221-240g/km*. Key contributors to the improved fuel efficiency on I6 petrol Falcon sedan models include a new, latest generation catalytic converter, a new engine calibration for improved cold start performance and a further optimised transmission calibration.

Great news! The Falcon has always had great economy considering the power and size. I have seen evidence of 10.5-10.8l/100km mostly around town.

I assume this 6 speed auto is the ZF which has become optional on the base models.

When do they have to adopt the new fuel requirements where it will be seperate hwy and city economy advertised?
My BF2 XR6T gets 9L on the hwy and 18L around town for an average of 13.5L/100. The old system is very misleading (though it is a level playing field). Still a very impressive result all the same for these FG's.

This is fantastic. The so called experts call this engine "dated" , yet since the BA , fuel econ has improved from 11.5 to 9.9. Holden in the same time have only managed to get as low as 10.5. Remembering thats for a base Omega. Top of the line Holdens are still over he 11 mark. Remarkable for a "Modern" engine that cost squillions to make, yet the good old Falcon Six trounces it in every way.

Normally around town - mostly peakhour its about 13-14lt/100 but i do have a much free-er flowing CAI and exhaust

See the cars guide and drive should pick this up. That a 6cyl has the same ADR figure as the 4cyl Camry.

This is great news.
Not necessarily enough to constitute Euro4 compliance without knowing the CO and NOx levels. CO2 on its own does not form part of the emissions compliance regualtions. Further to the good news, is that Territory is going to benefit not only from these improvements, but also weight reduction! |

For example, you get a big fuel economy gain (0.6 l/100) for RWD TX/TS territory, but 7 seaters only get a 0.2 gain (effectively same improvement as AWD versions). Has ford changed the design of the chassis in the rear somehow to delete strenghtening for 5 seat vehicles without the dicky seats??? I think 'transmission calibration' has a fair part to play here. You get a 0.2 l/100 improvement in ZF XT, but 0.1 for other models with ZF??? Sounds like they have changed the tunes for diff. models to favour economy more (XT) versus driveability, at least in the base tunes (not including sports mode etc.) Aurion has the same efficiency across all models for example.... Either way, while i'm sure falcon/territory will still be the best to drive in their segments, this just might be further proof of the fuel efficiency demands of modern society methinks. At least we didn't lose power, like our mates at Holden. they must be feeling great about now, all that work to make the alloytec decent, it still doesn't match FG, now this update and they look even more stupid..... At this rate a DI alloytec with 5/6 speed will have trouble matching FG fuel economy, if that isn't proof of how great the modern 4.0 I6 is the i don't know what is.

This is great stuff, shows just how little fuel a big car can sip with the right technology.

Do not underestimate how important this news is to the Falcon fleet purchaser. Most State and Local governments are now insisting on minimum greenhouse gas ratings before even considering the vehicle. For some fleet purchasers the minimum number has been in excess of 5 stars (thereby excluding the Falcon).
At 5.5 stars, the Falcon gets itself back on the shopping list. |

I've been gas bagging about the improvements in fuel economy from BA to BF for ages, good to see they're keeping up the good work.
