Question about legality and possibility of early full licence.

Hey guys,

My paticular career choice relies on the employees having a full license.

This means at the end of this year when I finish my TAFE course, I won't be able to work in this industry untill the end of 2010.

I had someone tell me the other day if I go over to WA for a day or two, obtain a license there, then come back to Vic, and transfer my license back, it will be a full license.

I understand the reason behind P-Plates, and the probationary license, but if this is possible I'd be interested in giving it a shot.

I have doubts on whether it can be done or I would have thought I would have heard of it before.

Question is:

1) Possible?
2) Legal?
3) Practical?
4) Moral?
5) Do YOU think I should?

can't be done, unless you have residency over in W.A. .. as in an adress of where you live so that all your details can be posted to you .. .

could probably get away with it by having a P.O. Box?

i moved to ayers rock resort to work as a young tacker, normal qld licence has it that you must have p's for 3 yrs before you go on opens, but when i got there you only need p's for a year then your on opens, so i got open licence straight away. but yoll need a valid adress to move to and from in the NT, not sure how the WA system works tho

but when you move back ( in my experience) they takethe fact youve got a open licence and transfer it to normal in QLD.

imagine other states would do similar

Where cars (and insurance) are concerned I would have thought any license would be ok.

I live in NSW and done this, i went to S.a and got my licence there, was only on my P's for 12 months then got my full licence. I was able to provide proof of residence, thats going to be your first issue. Seccond issue is i had to leae my licence as a S.a one as NSW has a clause stating that if you hadnt held a full licence for more than 3 years you had to start the P's process, be carefull of this and worst case leave it as a W.s licence.

I say go for it mate, whats the worst that can happen.

I imagine some business insurance would stipulate no P-Platers, and I imagine most bosses would want drivers with some experience, not some new driver eager to thrash anything and everything.

Insurance just about doubles for P platers.

Many jobs, some delivery drivers, ambulance, fire brigade, police, taxi drivers.

I don't know about you but I've never seen an ambulance with P-Plates.

In most of these industries, the insurance won't cover P-Platers.

The stupid thing is they tell you to have a "Manual Un-restricted licence"...
There's no such thing as an manual or auto unrestricted...

I did it. We had a holiday address in NSW, I got my license when I turned 17, had full license when I turned 18, Just as my mates were starting their two years on P's here in Vic.

I did however have to wait until I turend 20 to transfer it back to Vic for full license. The rules (back then) was that you could only get victorian full license If you had turned 20 or two years driving, Which ever came LAST.
So long as you can get yourself a valid address in WA and are smart engough to answer the cops questions corretly when you get pulled over. (remember they have a record of when and where you had been previoulsy checked).
I don't believe it would be Legal, but personally, I would do it again. As for you doing it, The choice is really yours, as I said, you just need to be smart about doing it right.

BTW, what helps too is to be driving a VIC reg car in a relatives name....NOT YOURS.
You can then say you borrowed it while you are "Over here Visiting Family"

A few years back if you got a truck licence while on your P's then you automatically get your opens. Not sure if that loop hole is still around.

There is actually in QLD if you get your licence on an auto car it is endorsed as auto only and you are not permitted to drive a manual.

From what I've been told, as far as Emergency Services are concerned, they aren't required to show P plates, something to do with Authority, I mean seriously how many old blokes would take a Police car seriously if they saw the big P plates on the Window.

My personal feeling is if it was that easy to do everyone would do it. I don't think it's a matter of just flying over to get your P plate license in WA and getting a full license on the change over in VIC.

Even if you get an auto only license, once you get your full license you can drive what you want. There is no auto only full license.

I wonder if what they mean is that they actually want you to have some driving experience.
Maybe it could be better worded as "Held a drivers licence for at least 3 years".

If there is an insurance/liability issue and you pull a stunt and aquire an open licence then should an incident happen you will be in a world of pain fighting off the lawyers.

Life is not fair, get used to it......

Yep police in NSW require greens. But the dont need to be shown.

my brother moved from SA to vic when he joined the army and left all his SA full license until he was old enough to get the vic full license (15 months)

My mate got his Ps before he was 17 and in high school, and therefore got this licence earlier. He had to do some sort of test I think. It was because of training requirements for the sport he played.

You also never see P plates on a cop car either. My assumption always was that they had to be fully licensed also but it is not the case, they are exempt from there P's because of the training they get behind the wheel.

To answer your question though I don't think you can dodge the bullet I'm on my P's and drive a semi for a living and they wouldn't let me get my full licence early. I mainly wanted it for the extra point seen as I do prob 1500-2000k's more a week than your average P plater but they didn't want a bar of it.
