I was in the newsy this morning grabbing the sunday rags when I spotted "Street Fords" issue 2.
I shelled out my hard earned $7.95 and prepared for a nice read while quaffing coffee at my local cafe. The mag fell open on page 112, titled "The sound of THUNDER". The article was light and fluffy as many of these sort of things are but when I read some of the pricing and specifications/accessories I wondered if the writer was actually on work experience rather than an actual professional journalist. The first rule of journalism, "If you don't know, make it up or lie" can sometimes get you into the shit when a large sector your reader demographic are enthusiests. In two pages (112,113) I found; 1) The diff in the manual is 3.73 to 1; no it is 3.46 in the GT, 3.73 is F6's ratio 2) The alarm system is a $620 option; no it is standared on all FPVs, it is a $620 option on the XR6T etc 3) The accessory prices quoted include LCT; No there is 25% on all factory fitted options on GTs. Now some people actually use magazine articles to gain information on which to base their purchacing decissions, silly people. I have, on the odd occasion, had a go at MOTOR & WHEELS over editiorial but I can not remember any occasion where either of these "professional" publications made so many glaring errors. It is called PROOF READING........ Now my info comes from a couple of really difficult places to access; the internet i.e. fpv.com.au & ford.com.au and my friendly local FPV shop. I wonder how many other advertisments or articles are also this inaccurate? Anyway, at least I will be saving $7.95 when the next issue comes out as I now regard this mag in the same light as all the "Ricer rags" that populate the shelves at most newsagents. |

I think Editions 1 and 2 were finished and printed months ago. Maybe they were correct at the time but have changed since they were orginally completed. Don't quote me on that, but I'm sure thats what JR previously.

Picked up my copy during the week. My GT made yet another Cameo Appearance (tm) in the article on the FPV Day. Oh, and great photo Brad.

I had to have a chuckle when he said " Think of a hundred reasons not to buy this car then go and take a test drive, the exhaust note alone will negate every one of them" Probably right too.
I also thought the 3.73 diff ratio sounded a bit suss, but then he started ranting about the fuel usage... Who buys one of these cars with economy in mind??? |

I picked up the mag during the week, I haven't read one magazine which has picked up every typo before print so I'm not going to hang StreetFords neck over that.
At least we have 2 dedicated Ford mags. The good points far out weigh the negatives, I reckon the whole layout of the mag is great and quality of the pics pretty damn good for only the second go. It will only get better....

I respect and read all your opinions with great interest but I think this thread is alittle pointless and a cheap shot at the second issue of a brand new magazine. Last edited by RATT; 05-06-2005 at 09:59 PM. |

Well I missed out on grabbing the first edition but swooped in for the second.
And I would like to congratulate JR on a fine magazine that I imagine will only improve with time. Being a 'car club enthusiast' himself, gives him a different perspective of what to bring to a magazine but at the same time the mag has kept true to auto mags with specs, etc. I say well done and yes, someone special has requested the dinner again for next year : |

As far as the MOTOR stuff, it is more in you interpretation of the writing rather than clinical factuality. The Brembos are an "option" on every model FPV except the GT-P (and now the Super Pursuit), therefore it is not inaccurate to state that the GT-P comes standard with the Brembo option. The limiter/twist/rev statement is opinional possibly based on the writers observation. Hammer a GT-P in 1st or 2nd (remembering limit in 3rd is about 160km/h) and the tacho lags enough that it appears to cut out at 5500 rpm. The actual rev limit is not detailed on any publicly accessable place. You being in the game are quite aware that all the tech manuals and marketing crap are "secret, internal use only". Like the comment that BOSS gets 18l/100km and is a fuel eating monster, I used to average 12-13l/100km, but then I was used to it and didn't go woohoo bezerk at every occasion in a new toy that belonged to someone else. I did get 18l/100km ono when I first got it for exactly that reason. There is a BIG difference between an interpretation and an incorrect statement. xxx comes with the option; no it is not an option it is standard but an option on others is fairly plain coloquial english, not 100% accurate but the concept is carried adequately. xxx costs $yyy; no it does not cost anything or xxx is 3.73; no it is 3.46 when such information is in the public domain is just WRONG, simple really. Anyway, this is becoming pedantic now, so ok, they ****ed up, I bet they don't again for a while. |

Thanks for the reply flappist. As you say, alot of these articles allow for a degree of interpretation, and at the end of the day errors can and will occur.
With Motors example I believe readers would have had the impression that 19's and brembos were "optional" on the GT-P specifically rather than an option on everything else but the GT-P. Anyway. I am sure street fords, like any new magazine will improve with every issue as already shown with the improvement between issue one and two. |
