Hernia Op

Anyone had an operation on a hernia? I'm having one done tomorow. Just wandering how others have managed after having it done. I'm hoping i'll be ok with in a couple of weeks cause the gf is due in 2 week to have the baby.

you should be fine to help your gf when bub comes. You are not allowed heavy lifting and usually pain is minimal after a few days. This is going by memory when my father had is done in 93. The surgery is not like it was about 10 or so years ago its what they call key hole which means recovery is faster than the old style of doing it.

is this hernia in your groin or your abdomen ?
If you get keyhole surgery you will be back on your feeet in about 1 week (with restrictions of course like mrs casper said)
Ive had three done (in my abdomen) since feb 03...only because of incompitence and bad luck.

You have nothing to worry about, its an easy op..Good luck with the bub too...

It's a grion hernia. I hope they do keyhole the sergeon did say it depend on how big it was at the time of the OP.

I had a groin hernia, a really big one a full on guts blow out lol. It was all done pretty quick but a stayed an extra day due to them pumping me way full of pethadine. i was up and about in 1 or 2 days and driving after a week or so. Problem is the scar tissue occasionally gives me some pain, esp if i overdo it a bit with something real heavy.

I've watched a few being done, they look pretty straight forward, usually always keyhole surgery even though your surgeon will warn you otherwise (he has to in case something does go wrong which is very rare). Patients are usually discharged the next day with some pain killers. No heavy lifting or operating heavy machinery etc..

Grandfather had one a couple of years back and was fine the next day.

I'm actually going in for one soon too (groin also), apparently early-mid april... gotta love the public waiting list.

I'm really hoping for keyhole cause I dont want to be restricted from driving for the 4 weeks the pamphlet says about open surgery.

Does anyone know if I can opt for a particular way to have it done seeing that I am in the hands of the public system?

I know about the heavy lifting part cause i'm a storeman who has been sitting on his *** for the last 8 weeks waiting for workcare to get the finger out of u know where

I cant really coment on your surgery but my youngest had one of the biggest hernias the surgeon had seen on one so young in the groin ...... he was 3 months old. He is unaffected now & for obvious reasons it was easy to not let him do much ;)

Interesting....my house-mate just went in for his op on a hernia today. I am helping him out around the house for the next few days...so I don't know what to expect.

I do know that he has had a little bit of pain after the surgery, but apart from that he is fine.

Just remember to take it easy and rest as much as you can.

Ain't the public system great? It only took them 9 years to finally take out my appendics that gave me hell for all that time.

There is no way for you to opt for a particular way for the Op to be done, it depends on the individual. Having said that, keyhole surgery is by far the most popular method used these days, less invasive, less pain and quicker recovery time for the patient.

Had a Double Hernia op when i was 3 years old, so really cant remember much bar being in the hospital bed with mum next to me, and the next day riding my bike out the back yard at home

Well i'm home and in a fair amount of pain. The pain killers i got r good and i am walking around be it very slowly. I asked them to knock me out i didn't want to know what was going on. The next few days will be resting haha i hope

u will be right rspec, hope they gave u panadine forte, was the only one that worked when i had all mine done

If they did keyhole u will be right in a couple of days mate..

I'm off for my op on monday. I initially thought it was going to be keyhole but I've since found out it will be open surgery, which doesnt really bother except for the extra healing time. I'm gunna have to take a bit more time off from school.

What sort of pain am I in for Rspec??

My nephew had a groin hernia op when he was four weeks old, so can't compare it to you really! Glad it all went well for you.

Make sure the you do rest up as to many people have operations, think they are fine and do silly things they shouldn't then live to regret it when they are older.

I had a groin hernia when I was 16(about 20years ago)........**** it hurt after that for about a week.

I was back at work 6 weeks later...........Wait until you have to do your first dump.

Make sure you have plenty of paper......to wipe the tears from your eyes .

I am not trying to scare you just tell it how it was. I have a scar from the the top left of my dick about 7 inches long going towards my hip.

When in hospital after the op, ask for a pain relief called "Endones"

I had them with my broken collar bone........THE BEST tablet for pain killer you can get.

man had to read this thread i have 3 hernias 2 in the groin realy small undetectable to the eye and 1 in the belly buton i just decided tonight to get it done cause it hurts when i lift . the belly button one that is . shit scared about surgey but what do you do . wife says i'm a whimp..

I guess I was lcuky in that respect, I have never had any pain from it...the occasional niggle but nothing to write home about.

Anyway, will be gone in about 3 hrs

Well, one of my mates had a hernia operation (groin area) when he was 14... I told everyone at highschool he was having a sex change

Well that was a lot better than I expected. I got to the hospital at 12:30, went into theatre at about 1:20pm, I first woke up at about 2:45 and then on and off every 10 mins or so until 3:45. I was up and walking at about 4:10. They were all amazed/impressed with how well I recovered from the General Anaesthetic (first time). I was home at about 5:30.
I'm walking around slowly at the moment and being cautious of how I move my right leg (hernia was on right hand side), but all in all its great considering.
In the op they pumped the area full of local anaesthetic which should last until around 1-2am, then I got some tablets which should last till around 3:40am, and hopefully when it wears off I dont wake up in excrutiating pain.

I cant judge how its going to be tomorrow but I am in way less pain than I was expecting. I was actually expecting to have to be wheeled out to the car in a wheelchair, so this is very good so far

Oh and the best bit.....the doc reckons I will be fine to drive in 7-10 days, but I think I will give it a full 2 weeks.
