It is this type of mentality that gets people killed.By the way it is not your mum or your dad that has to go and pick the pieces of broken bodies up of the road when their is a fatality caused by speeding. OK.Think about it.

Have you driven in the NT? Their major highways (Sturt/Barkly/Victoria) are a lot wider, and a lot smoother than any highway I have driven on so far. They are in a lot better condition than any road I have seen in QLD.
All of their major highways have open limits by the way.
There are plenty of accidents in the NT, just as many as any of the other states and territories, I am not going to get into facts and figures, no doubt Keepleft will know what they are.

Of course it's safer on the track. There are controlled conditions.

When your at a track *generally* any other car will be there for the same reason as you, going fast around the bendy/straight bits and you can have a good guess at what they'll be doing (and every is aware of what they're doing as well). However on a road, there are many incompetent drivers who will do unpredictable things, or just idiot drivers who arn't paying attention to the road in the slightest.

do you know whats scarier than doing 215ks on a bitchumised predictable smooth road? (and i'd know, not that i was driving i dont even have a licence) it's doing 140 in a landcruiser which weighs about 2.5 tonne (over loaded with tools) and with air bag suspension on a one lane country gravel road, which is totaly unpredictable and could easily slide out... now thats just scary as all the blokes at work are ing hoons.

the age old issue of speeding, hmm well like 99% of us here i have done my fair share just been lucky enough to be done 4 times in 6 years of driving and doing 1200km a week for work on the road, touch wood im doing well.

anyone who is blind enough here to belive the bull about 5k over and you will die needs to have their head read, the less time i spend on the opposite side of the road over taking a 55M long B double the better if that means being able to safely do 150 on a long streatch to get past then thats what it means... sitting on cruise 120 most of the way to mt isa from brissy and in some places 130 was the best thing i could do, cut 2-3 hr off total time and im more alert/aware at 130 esp when there is 272+kms between towns and you dont see a car for an hour or so, and yea hell i have done well over 200 if i got bored and i had a streatch till i could see the horizion, the company avalon did it, my fairlane did it, hell the 4cyl camry did 190 at WOT, im still here to tell the tale.... there is a time and a place.

At least when you hit a tree whilst doing those speeds, you will not get brain damage! You need a brain first!

I only hope you don't hurt or kill others in the process.

You do not desearve to be on Australian roads!

LTDHO: i won't debate your statement of being a angel, but i'll debate that your a entirely safe driver,so you've never stopped on a zebra crossing never chucked a illegal u turn, never been booked or stopped for being naughty what so ever, all those in their own right have a "safety" concern to them, your just not admitting to being naughty.

i remember when i was 18-19 and in a mates VL,we pushed it to 205kmh(wont state where n when could of been open or private road) but it was a granny spec low k's vl it felt firm on the road and didnt shake abit, then you have my pajero newer and in less better shape atm i would never push 120 in it (ever)

some roads are designed for it some aint, some ppl speed and some don't,i remember reading about a teen on his L's near goulburn NSW with his sleeping licenced driver doing 200kmh he cop'd it hard and good, but LTDHO no offense but imho any accident that doesnt result in a accident injury or death never deserves 10years in any jail.

dangerous driving causing injury aka grevios bodily harm imho deserves half that
a death deserves the 10 years

speeding if in the extreme nature deserves if the person has a reckless history maybe at worst 1yr in jail or a few years on a suspended jail term, these days the hoon laws and half the crap we read polutes our minds and half even aint true.
imho if your caught doing 120 in a 40 zone with kids at school etc then your deserving what you get,but open road and involves no police chase imho its just a simple case os speeding, one which is 45k's over.

next ppl will think that cause FnF tokyo drift is out that'll make all of us wanna take our family spec falcons and commo's out to drift em,but i guess that deserves 10yrs too. :

Rediculous and selfish in the extreme... if you're "lucky" enough to only off youself what about all the grieving people you leave behind or those who have to clean up the mess of you smeared down the road or over a tree?

Thats what has always been drilled into my head. A death in the family, especially when its someone young, causes so much grief. I could never be responsible for that.

Actually they already have.

Don't these idiots know some golden rules:

1) Don't goto the movies
2) Have more control over your children
3) Turn it off

Smoking, Binge drinking (underage) & Marijuana use is much worse but you don't see parents whinging about that too much.

Speeding is the same and handling a live(no lock) gun.
Sadly of the above, speeding & a live gun has resulted in deaths in the job in VicPol. The argument is clear and simple that excess speed in any zone is stupid and dangerous, however 5km/h over in good conditions on a good road in a good car is not going to kill you anymore then if you were 5km/h under.

Exaclty, ive lost a few close friends to road trauma, one in particular was a close friend who was only 17, she was a passenger in an accident 18 years ago, the driver lost control in an act of stupidity doing 90 in a 60 zone and hit a pole.
The family to this day have never really recovered from their loss, for various reasons including blame and responsability issues, its fragmented the family and our circle of friends enourmously.
We've never been the same since and i often think about her and miss her.
What may seem as a "low risk" safe bet at the time may have life long repercussions for so many people other than just those killed....

So, you're driving on public roads, when only on a learners permit, with no adult in the car, at double the speed limit?

There's pushing the envelope, and there's going to far. You better grow up quick mate.

Come one, the closed track to me it over an hour, this doesn't mean I'll use the public roads instead. I'm sure at 17 you have years of experience under your belt and been involved in all varieties of road conditions and situations, this doesn't mean you can drive that fast on public roads!

for you young ones out there,
when i was in my twenties ,i was with mate in his old ZA Fairland doing about 70mph at 4 in the morning on nice straight Hiway when i saw same house lights from farm we were driving past two times,i thought WTF ,then we realised the car had started spinning in one and a half times facing back the way we had come from, this was outside Cranbourne Melbourne ,we had struck black ice from typical winters night in Victoria travelled same road twice a day for 6 months working as Garbo, it was a miracle car stayed on road, and no one was coming the other way or tailgating like lots of mates do mucking around.never assume because road is clear its safe.also in a small car with big wheels it will happen even easier.

I'm 17 yr/o and annoyed my car wont go faster than 180....

Now wait, hold that critisism.

It was on a local road I've driven on for years, know every bump and corner, and it was when I knew there'd be no traffic, or police.

This guy is just doing what we all have done, except we were smart enough not to get caught.

Atleast he pulled over, I could only think what I would do if I had a car with power and I already had 200km/h of momentum behind me.

Smart? There is no intelligence in this. Just stupidity.
