A few have said they would be Thrashed, now what exactly is thrashing? the majority of them I see are driving in amongst the traffic within the traffic rules, a pursuit would normally be a hard u turn boot it for a few seconds.
I can assure you if cop cars drove around redlining it in front of the public they wouldn't be cops for very long

My father in law is an ex-hwy patrol copper, and he used to get stuck into his cars, no doubt. But he is a highly skilled driver and drove them as they were designed to be driven. Your average P plater on the other hand, doing illegal mods and redlining it for fun/burnouts would do far more damage. I think you'll be fine with one, have it fully checked by your state's automotive body if you have concerns.

Thrashed?
so they get driven worse than most the turbo's that young guys own? I also used to work in a dealership that used to look after cop cars, they were maintained better than most cars, brakes were replaced a long time before minimum acceptable thickness and were taken out of duty after a pursuit until the car was inspected, Any issues during operation were sorted immediately or car kept out of duty until a time that the car was rectified, any big repairs the car would be retired early. Any officer with a history of doing damage would be spoken to about driving habits

When I was a kid I used to spend a bit of time in XD and XE cop cars
My uncle would even take us for a spin and let us play with the lights and siren Yep, he would give it some stick, push it around bends and such. Am sure not much has changed But for the most part the cars are driven inside design parameters. I would buy an ex police XR6T, long before I'd buy one off a P plater (No offense to most P platers, but some are just )

It's like buying any second hand car, each car needs to be assessed thoroughly on its own merits. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an ex cop XR6T.

I've had 2 1xVY that I think had been in the Macquarie Fields riots and as it was an ex Campbelltown car (could still make out the lettering on the bonnet) and it was about 8 shades of white) and 1xVZ
Both purchased on price as grocery getters both were fantastic cars that never gave any trouble, the VZ still belongs to my sister inlaw and its only issue in the years it's been in my family is a radiator

If it’s at the right price there’s nothing wrong with buying a well broken in car, you know it’s going to go hard unlike some that have been pussyfooted around.
All cars are a lucky dip anyhow and with second hand ones be prepared for the worst and pleasantly surprised by the good. |

Well I got my XC chaser in 1981, still got it, but they don't make them like that anymore.
Yes the best ones to go for are country ones, get looked after better. With a city one check the log books and see how quick it racked up the kays.

We service police cars at work and they get everything replaced early. E.g Minimum tyre tread depth is 4mm.
However I will quote from one of the local officers ''I would never buy a cop car'' spoken last week as they are about to get a replacement.

Gotta be honest. I would rather have a turbo that's been driven by the cops, than by some of the dills that post in here "300kw isn't enough so I need to get mine tuned to 400."

Loving all the negative comments (though I notice they are all from ones who have never had one), the more that wouldn't buy one the the better, keeps them cheap for us that appreciate what a bargain they are...

Question
"Would a lot of people even know that they had owned one"? The majority end up sold by used dealers, and are well priced, do most people even bother to look who the previous owner was in the log book (is it even listed as Police owned), or do the dealers throw the books and say unknown history hence the cheaper price !!! Or I buy one, keep it for 6 months, put a stcker with my details as owner in the log book and sell to Mr & Mr's Unsuspecting for a tidy profit Have owned ex council, good experience there. Have bought ex fleet also, no complaints. Had a mate with a VP ex cop, it was good enough, great price. It all comes down to how hard you look over a car and what you find that should determine IF you buy it

I wish people would take notice of what irvinnie said. My car got 45000Ks from the tyres, & I can tell you, theres not many on here that get those sort of Ks out of their tyres, so explain to me how if your getting 40,000+ out of tyres how the cars is thrashed??
Mine is still on the ORIGINAL Brembo rotors 135000+ Ks ! Yes they can get mistreated, but thrashed is a different thing to mistreating..

Most are probably treated and services better than my ex-rental FG.
If i was after a new-ish budget XR6T ... I wouldn't hesitate at getting one. OZZY I think it is ... has an FGII NSW ex-HWP. Pretty nice vehicle indeed. With BlueBear on this ... if you don't like them .... don't buy them ... keeps it cheaper for the ones who want a value performance vehicle.

Have a 2012 fg2 xr6t ex hwy since 2013. Got it with 75,000km on it and it has 92,000 now.
Since ive had it ive gotten the following replaced under warranty, all pretty trivial stuff Driver/passenger power window switch Split heater core hose Centre drive shaft bush, rear bushes twice Front timing case seal was weeping so it was redone Tensioner pulley And I did the brembo rotors at 90,000. Apparently they get changed every 15,000 by the coppers that get hwy cars serviced at castle hill ford, so the previous post about original rotors at 135k sounds like bs. Overall I don't have any complaints about it! I did shop around a bit at the time driving a few ex hwy cars and this one drove the best. It actually drove better than most private sale ones I tried too. |

Don't forget too that they are always only run on E10 (usually a full tank per shift, sometimes even a need to have a top up mid shift)
They are rarely turned off in a shift (this could be a good thing). They have gone through approx 4 to 8 sets of tyres. They are driven hard and fast from the second they arrive (some reckon this is also a good thing).

Re read my post, I bought my ex cop car in 2011 with 59000Ks on it, I sold last month after 4
years of ownership with 135000Ks on it, & it still has the original rotors. So its NOT BuII$hit as you say.. I had them machined at 110000Ks. They were still well inside limits. Does it look like its been mistreated??

What makes you believe they are the original rotors????
BTW no one said your car had been "mistreated".

Oh my god. You get a FULL & detailed printout of their service life, from the day they were delivered to the cops to the day they went to the sale yard. & I do mean FULL printout. Mine was serviced at every 7500Ks It told me when & at what Ks the tyres were fitted. What date & Ks the services were done, what was done. You get the work's. Nothing is overlooked. Anyway, the overwhelming fact is,99% of people that have had an ex chaser would have no problem getting another.
