A number of European countries and Israel use Octavias. Watching one of these steaming down a motorway at something over 200 (max is about 225 I think) is quite a sight!
What would you need a big V8 for anyway after Falcons and Commodores are gone? The average hoon isn't going to be found in the few fasties that will be left, like BMW, Audi. The majority of people are progressively downsizing into smaller, more economical cars that will be easy to catch. Not many people will be going past 220. Anything serious they would be using other methods anyway. |

i still reckon they will use a Holden or Ford car after 2017.
the US was demanding commodores for the police force. there selling them as chevy caprices. the americans want big rwd police and services cars and we do to. unfortunately everyone is phasing out rwd, to save production costs. up in qld, ive only seen detectives in commodores and g6e's etc.. but patrol cars were rookies in camry's But! i did just find this article put out today. with this statement from ford: A statement from Ford Australia said: “We cannot discuss private dealings with our fleet customers but we do plan to remain a leader with law enforcement.” http://www.weeklytimesnow.com.au/new...-1226938451682 so i doubt all the police will be rolling around in mustangs, probably mondeo's or taurus etc.. |

fwd cars are poo in chases.
the police have 3 types of cars, general duty, urgent duty, highway patrol the latter two can be performed by the same model, but generally not. plus it depends on what state we are taking about. aurions and camry's are general duty cars. they dont pass the urgent duty class. they are set aside for the falcons and commodores. they are in everyway more superior when it comes to road handling for there purposes. we don't have little streets like they do in urban europe, we have big long roads. Dont you just love how the world is going these days. the next commodore is going to be made in china. probably the falcon's replacement aswell. talk about throwing in the towel. if i want chinese **** i go to a $2 shop. not a car dealership. That must be why they used these to catch Holdens and Falcons (at Bathurst too): They could go around corners you see - because they were fwd. |

In days (far) past, cops had to have cars that were capable of getting from A to B speedily and catching your average hoon. Fact is that just about any half-decent modern car can do the A to B part, and when your "average hoon" is some crackhead driving a 600kw WRX Turbo, "chases" are more of a watch and wait event. I can remember yonks back, when the WA police stopped buying V8 commodes because the V6 was fast enough. (Not sure if that changed after we got rid of the sheep-shagger?) |

Surely whatever they choose will have to have 4 doors - to meet current OH&S policies ?? Maybe have a few 2 doors for promotional type duties...

Hmmm FWD for a largish car that can perform and handle.
If you look at the premium marques, are there any ? I have not done the research, but I would imaging that if you put the cutoff at say $80k, the only FWD largish sedan that is FWD would be a Toyota. Ask Merc, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Jag what they think is the best handling platform for a car big enough for two cops and two thugs ... they will not be offering a FWD. Should all police cars be powerful RWD/AWD - probably not. I think the ford stable could offer the police Stang, New large SUV (Is everest confirmed as a name ?), Mondeo, Focus, and ...... Taurus (please bring the TT in and call it almost anything but Taurus !!) |

Here's a good look back at when the old Mini was king!!!
Had to laugh on the video when they said "the mountain doesn't suit large cars" http://www.motorsportretro.com/2013/...1966-bathurst/ Last year a 4 cylinder won at Bathurst for a very long time....

WTF is that lightbar from the 90's doing on a 2015 Mustang, they wouldn't catch a smart car due to the windage from the lightbar

They still use the same style on Victoria's patient transport vehicles because they're much cheaper than a full LED light bar, I reckon the old style one looks better at night too with the rotators and the halogen lights rather than just some flashing LEDs.
Those LED light bars are about $3K each If they're just mounted on the roof they whistle like a ***** at 100km/h though lol. Last edited by Franco Cozzo; 02-06-2014 at 05:05 PM. |

Those more interested in recognition and visibility should Google John Killeen.
He does excellent work for Australia's emergency services. |

There was an AWD variant of the CD4 platform (that's the new Mondeo/Fusion) in the works for the European market with a diesel engine. I don't know what happened to it but the platform is AWD capable, and if they used that new 2.7 Ecoboost V6 (240kw and 500-ish nm) that would be enough poke for the cops plus an AWD drivetrain to keep them out of trouble.

Highway patrol cars are not all about tracking down super speed cars the grunt is needed to go from standstill up to speed. Once saw a demo on a police training track where a car was sitting on a steady 120klm and a highway patrol car stationary then takes of to catch him the lead car covers a lot of ground before he is tracked down |

Just quickly looking up figures (correct me if I'm wrong), but XR6T Falcon 0-100 in 5.2. seconds (Wheels figure, could be old, but it would be ballpark) vs Octavia VRS 0-100 in 6.8 seconds. Is 2 seconds to 100 km/h really going to make that much difference? Even 5 seconds for that matter- it's not like it takes a whole minute longer to catch up. Here's the same European ****box at work : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bHvwMQ-nbA Go to 4:20 min to see it in road view. (That looks like the Via Carolina, my old milk run, though I never got up to those speeds but was passed by many Audis and BMWs doing just that!) You gotta ask, at the bottom of your hearts, whether those big cars are really needed any more. Judging by the world list posted by Wretched before, not many jurisdictions seems to think so. If the Falcon goes, surely there has to be a role for the likes of Mondeo and Focus to replace it. Think positive. |

I cannot see why HWP cannot use Mustangs.
Apprehending a suspect can then call on the divisional van, many now I see are Hiluxes.
