Does anyone know if this affects people who already have their license? I use my hands free mobile for work in the car everyday, I can't not have it. |

Eventually they'll just decide to ban people :
Then write them a strongly worded letter, they can't ban you from doing your job. Or get on the phone to VicRoads for some sort of exemption.

I agree with the theory .. people spend to much time fixated with mobile phones. They think if they ignore one call it will be the end-of-the-world. Ten years ago hardly anyone had a mobile phone and strangely enough people survived!! [ I wish I could ditch mine .. I'm sick of being oncall 24x7 ]
Just ban everyone from using them while driving .. that's what voicemail is for. Easy to enforce. Will probably save a few lives. |

I think it's only Victoria at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if this new ledgo finds its way into other states as well.
Arrrgghhhh! I need to strangle something... where's Harold Scruby when you need him? At the rate P platers are being banned from doing things, what is it going to be like for the next generation? Soon we'll be forced to learn to drive on simulators (at the learners expense of course)

I agree, if you can't speak and drive at the same time, you shouldn't be driving, simple as that. Composing and sending an SMS while driving is VERY different to taking a call on a hands free setup...

Please, I beg you, quote me on this.
In 12-18 months time there will be a ban on p-platers, OR young people, owning or driving any car with ANY SORT of non-standard engine or driveline modification.

What is the difference between speak to somebody on a hands free kit, or singing along to your fav song on the radio. Either way, your attention has been re-directed from what your doing, should we also ban radios ?? What if you need to open a window ?? This requires a couple seconds of "one hand off the wheel". Should we also ban windows in all cars ?? This is not a sollution to anything, its just another stupid way of making money/revenue raising. And what happens to those people who need to have a phone in their cars ?? On road sales people ?? Support people ?? Do they need to find new work because they can no longer use their hands free kit in their cars ?? |

OK .. so I'm the bad guy here. So everyone was expecting that "everyone" would support this post? Last time I checked this was a democracy and typically things got passed into legistation via a majority? (well .. that's the theory ).
People seem pretty touchy about this subject, and I'm not sure if the focus is the bit about P-platers or about mobile phones? If it's about P-platers I sympathise that you have been singled out. If it's about mobile phones I still feel sympathy that you are so dependant upon you phones either by want or necessity? I am a member of a number of car clubs and I will support fighting legistation when it is relevant to my hobby. This is not relevant. It's about the equivalent of banning smoking in public places ... something most research (which in the case of mobile phone usage, I personally agree with) shows is bad for our health, but some people will always complain about it anyway .. My point is if you are going to do it to one group, do it to all. |

before we get too upset, just how are they going to enforce this. if your like me and have a handsfree dash setup, like a few of you have mentioned, it's just like talking to yourself and driving at the same time. they cant stop someone from talking to themselves!!!
IMHO there is no way they can enforce this so it will be added to the hundreds of other laws that nobody knows about and are NOT enforced AT ALL.

Hmm i know listening to the stereo only distracts me when its blasted so loud i cant hear myself think. Cant say the same for mobile phones. There is no need to be driving and on the phone. If its that important you pull over and talk.
Ive done it once and it was bloody hard so i know not to do it again. I cannot tell you how many people have nearly taken me out even with the Bluetooth setup. |

Im just questioning your point of opinion as to how a hands free phone kit is any different to the above mentioned (ie, radios, windows, manual transmission.....and now that you mentioned it, smoking whilst driving). Personally, i would increase fines for people that talk on a phone or sms whilst driving, because that just outright dangerous, however, whether i be talking on my hands free phone or singing to a song, i really cant see the difference there (PS....not that i be singing in my car but for the sake of arguement) The other point is....if the government band hands free kits (now im moving into a different topic) then will they also ban them from sale. I dont see how they can ban a product from being used that can readily and easily be purchased from almost anywhere. Again, this all sounds like a revenue raising tactic. |
