Is it worth getting one of these ~125 ebay CAI systems or should I just do a DIY using the stock location for air intake?
The CAI seems like it would place the filter down behind the fog light. I guess there is enough pressure down there. The stock location isn't so bad if using a bigger pipe to the airbox/resonator assembly since the air pressure is high enough at that location when moving. There are also more expensive CAI with foam filters and custom airboxes but I'm not sure they would be worth it on an older car. (Pipercross, volante etc) |

isn't the stock unit is pretty much cold, there is nothing to gain unless you want some noise from an open filter which isn't really legal in most states

Absolutely. Lot of water under the bridge since our last Car Show with the owner of that MK1 Focus in the link to that Thread. It was their pride and joy and took home their fair share of Trophies and deservedly so i.m.h.o.

I was thinking that since the stock airbox is tuned with that resonator I could just use a larger pipe that is insulated from heat, possibly taking air from the bottom grill since there is a nice opening that is separated from the radiator.
