Noisy Exhaust

Hi guys

I recently had a 2.5" sports exhaust fitted to my 6yl AUII, it consisted of a Manta centre muffler and a redback pipe on the back, no rear resonator. It was far too noisy for me (even though I wanted a sports system). I asked the people who fitted it if I could have a resonator fitted to the back to cut the noise down a bit. cut a long story short they were disinterested so I cut my losses and had a resonator fitted at another place and this did silence it somewhat but it still is too noisy. Anyway I might go back to standard, do you think if I just fit the stock centre section, would that make a difference? Most of the racket seems to be coming from that centre muffler. Any Ideas? Oh yeah, it's an auto if that makes a difference. Or alternatively, put stock back on the centre and rear and try and sell the sports system? I don't mind a bit noise under hard throttle but this system sounds awful.

I would suggest two sports mufflers would quiten it down. My AU11 runs a redback 2.5 with a rear resonator & it is still too loud for me (headers as well). I did have an EF with the same exhaust but no resonator or headers and it was a LOT quiter. I have been told the exhaust pipe tip/shape contributes to the noise (type) as well. Is your muffler a straight through type without baffles?I hope this helps.

I was told it was straight through, I was tempted to buy the stock rear section from repco and throw that on but I think the car would need to be in the air to get the pipe over the axle. Centre section would be a bit easier, but I'll take the advice to run it for a while and see if it quietens down a bit.

A rear muffler will control the drone noise. Maybe you are just not used to the noise from stock. In time you might be

I'm wondering this also. My sedan has the same system, Redback 2.5 with rear resonator and it sounds really nice IMO. It has the stock cat.

I have a 2.5 magancat/maxiflo/magnaflow something or other 2.5 cat and centre muffler and the Redback resonator on the wagon and that's a fair amount louder. You get used to it though.

I do prefer the quieter full Redback system on the sedan though. I've just had Pacemaker extractors fitted to that, so when I get the car back I'm wondering if the sound will change a little.

The droning noise will be more noticeable on a wagon without the rear muffler/resonator due to the length of the pipe. It is at its worst on long highway trips. Could be worse though it could be a 2 litre riceburner pulling 3k doing 115 kmph on a long trip...... lol

I've had 2 workshops (one top-shelf exhaust specialist, one shonky mechanic who since went bankrupt) tell me that sports exhausts quieten with time to carbon up. That has been my experience too, my 2.5" system with Pacey 4499's was incredibly loud when I first got it (from the shonky bloke, I didn't know at the time that he was shonky :togo. So much so that I nearly didn't take the car... I was tempted to demand the stock system back straight up. Over time however it has quietened a lot, after more than 100,000km I am happy with it, it purrs along at cruise but has a nice raspy bark through the midrange.

That's not the exhaust getting quieter; it's your ears getting used to the noise the exhaust produces. Either that, or after 100,000km, your cat has collapsed, hence the sudden quiet.

I've got the rear resonator on both my AUs, it's the middle muffler on the wagon that's louder than on the sedan. Granted, it did have 2 mufflers and the rear resonator previously! LOL!
