at 75 years and with a non beer 8 month preggy belly gut Ive decided enough is enough.
So exercise...diet etc etc please pass on your good and bad tips and ideas. For some reason I am getting bombed with mens yoga on FB but they all appear to be money grabbing sites. I have a very sweet tooth that is going to be a killer.

Funny ........ I am 77, and a New Year's 'goal' is to get rid of my gut, as I have gone from 90kg to 106kg in a few years after gall bladder surgery, now on medications, and yesterday I was looking for 'excuses'.
Have a search for 'cortisal belly' and what causes it. May not be your fault or life style. |

I've just gone back to my exercise routine as what I did a few years ago to loses weight, either one hour walk doing about 6 kilometers or one hour on the walking machine each day, this time I will also include rowing machine starting off about half hour and see how I will go.
Stop all forms of sugary type drinks including diet free drinks and back onto water, eat moderately smaller meals, last time I did this I went from 92 kilos back down to 65 kilos in 12 months. My goal is to be 65 to 70 kilos, gets harder when you older, I'm 68. cheers and good luck. |

Sugar is your worst enemy.
Stay off soft drinks etc. Reduce alcohol. Sugar substitutes are very bad, a chemical cocktail that plays havoc with your metabolism. Have a look at the ingredients in those Sugar Substitutes I don't know how they are allowed to be made and demed fit for consumption. I do have some vices I have full cream milk in my coffee and I do use butter. If you need a snack chose something healthy nuts etc. Last edited by EBSXR6; 05-01-2025 at 08:39 PM. |

I wish it was a beer belly. Haven't been able to have a drink for years now because of the medications I'm on at 74.
The worst one is for my adrenal glands which do not work. I was hoping it was only one so they could take it out and I could resume... The tablets I have to take for that have 2 side effects - one is a beer belly and the other is boobs. |

As mentioned above, if you want to loose weight it's all what you eat, exercise will factor in but you need to eat the right ratio of Protein, Fat and Carbs to match your activity. the more active you are the more you can intake however don't fall into the trap of thinking you can eat whatever after an exercise session as you'll gain
The most effective diet is the one you can stick to so it's important to run with something that fits your lifestyle otherwise it won't last long term I've dropped around 30kg over 18-24 months and managed to keep it off but it's a constant struggle to eat well but giving up booze and sugar is a big help, you need to be in the right headspace to tackle giving up Alcohol and Sugar IMHO I recommend seeking out a good Nutritionist, they will help get your head around eating the right foods in the correct portions for your goal/s and keep you on track

Don't set unrealistic goals. You'll just beat yourself mentally. You need to find a way to keep yourself motivated. This means finding something that suits you.

Don't go on a restrictive diet. Nobody ever sticks with them long term. Eat foods you want to eat, but eat an amount that corresponds to the calorie requirement of your target weight.
I used to do 5:2 intermittent fasting. 5 days eating like you normally eat, 2 days (non-consecutive) eating less than 500 Calories (in a practical sense, this means 1 modest meal that day only). No other major changes. Still had McD for lunch 1-2 times per week while working, no exercising. Lost 15kg over 3 months. On the fasting days, I'd drink black tea and have miso soup for lunch. They tide you over without contributing much to calories. Eventually, I stopped 5:2 fasting, and just ended up at one meal per day. No breakfast, no lunch, just dinner. No specific diet. |

Tonz, you’ve long held fast to your childhood sense of humour. Why not start your exercise routine with a local quota of “knock and run”?

Portion control and exercise.
Its bloody hard to give up the things you like, so cut down, not out. Use smaller dinner plates, cups, glasses. Walk, 5ks is great for mind and body. Dance, whack on Tina Turners Nut Bush and do the dance, you'll be suprised at how much effort it takes aerobicly and you can measure your improvement as it gets easier to do, the Family will love it too. Which leads to my final bit of advice, get an exercise buddy and motivate each other. |

there has been a walker machine we have moved with us over several years, this morning it was dragged out of hibernation kicking and screaming got 3 minutes on it before I thought I'd died, but repeated art lunch break and after dinner. if I can get past 5 minutes by end of week I'll be happy plus cutting down on meals.

I have familial hypercholesterolemia, have a statin to fix that but get tested every year. Missed a year during the lockdowns over COVID, next test I get a call to come in for an urgent chat. My fasting blood sugar was 19.5 (normal range between 4 and 6). ...so now I am also a Type 2 Diabetic and on slow-release metformin. Fwiw I had no symptoms, none at all, apart from being thirsty...in summer. I was under a LOT of stress with work and at home as my then-partner was (as it turns out) in the end stages of multiple cancers (she passed away at the end of the same year). I comfort-eat to cope with stress, apparently. Lifestyle and diet changes fixed my issue but until it's diagnosed properly you have no idea. Learning how to deal with stress also helped in my case. Once you're diagnosed it'll kick off appointments with dieticians and diabetes educators and podiatrists and all sorts of people... |

Yes
I too have hypercholesteremia and type 2 diabetes Both well under control with statins and meta formiins I have a great doctor When she told me I was over the number and in diabetes 2 territory I gave up alcohol and obvious sugar - as you know sugar is in so many things You are right but the dietician I saw twenty or twenty five years ago set me on a better path - I could have developed diabetes 2 a lot earlier but held it at bay a long long time So you are right doctor- then one of the people doctor will send you to will be a dietician |

I had good success with CSIRO Wellbeing diet.
Wheteher or not you formally sign up. up to you (I think) Good balanced diet with many recipe ideas, so you're not doing it on your own. Years ago, did Dr Sandra Cabot "Liver cleansing diet" I didn't think I had much weight to lose but went from near 100kg down to 84. As others have said, talk with your GP. Good luck. You've identidfied a problem, now get all the help you can to solve it! Steve
