During recent work to my 289 Windsor where the engine was removed, evidently my flex plate got bent and needs replacing (C4 auto). What happens with the balancing of a new flex plate, are the already balanced when you buy them? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Be careful when purchasing a flex plate that you match the one you have correctly.
Windsor have 157 and 164 teeth starter ring gear and also come in two different balance weights at 28 or 50 ounce. Early ones are normally 157t 28 ounce, later roller cam engines 164t and 50oz. Plenty of people have fitted the wrong flex plate and wonder why the engine has started to badly vibrate. Eagle have a range of flex plates. https://www.eagleautoparts.com.au/pa...20flex%20plate

If you examine your bent flexplate carefully you will soon be able to match yours. Count the teeth, look at the size of the counter weight and look at its position in relation to the crank bolt hole with the small cut out. Also measure diameter of the torque convertor bolt holes.
They all look different after a bit of practice you'll be good. |
