Default How much is fuel where you are?

Here, a gallon of 87 octane is about $2.50. That's CHEAP compared to what it was a few weeks ago when Hurricane Katrina rolled through. We were seeing prices around $3.20/gallon. My car gets about 18-20mpg on the highway since I installed the 3.73 gears, so I definitely need to find myself an econobox car for the drive to work.

1 gallon = 3.78 liters.

well we pay around $1.30 a litre so $1.30 x 3 = 3.90 + $1.094 for the .78l so that equals $4.994 a gallon aus$ or $us3.75 a gallon.
so you guys have it easy with the price of fuel

Are there alternate modes of transportation? Do people live near where they work? How do you cope with the high prices?

Hahaha.. (think... stupid Americans). And it's funny to me because that's what alot of us think when we hear about Aussies.

Lots of toll roads? I was curious about that... I guess they aren't that maintained. Almost 90% of our highways are free, but the state-sponsored roads are all toll roads... but still relatively cheap. I can travel 800km or so for about $20AUD on toll roads out here. Gas is too expensive though.. maybe I'll invest in a kangaroo.

Synergy 8000 (high octane premium unleaded - 98 RON): 134.2 cents per litre ($3.81 US/gallon)

I wish pertol was that cheap here!!! Wagga petrol prices suck. Prices go up with everyone else but dont come back down. Regular unleaded went upto 138.9 cent per litre when those hurricanes hit the gulf of mexico and it took around 4 weeks to come down to want it today.

We are still paying 134.9 cent per litre for regular unleaded.

around 142.9 cents per litre for premium

and 145.9ish cent per litre for high octane 98 RON.

When I went to Bathurst for the race I paid $150.9 cpl for bp ultimate 98 ron. Thats the highest I have paid. Doesn't help when it's an 82l tank either.

Drive XR7, in Australia the population is spread around a bit. It used to be that the populations were always very close to the main cities but in Sydney now not many people can afford to live there. So everyone's moving to the suburbs and beyond.

Which means more travel to work. On crap roads. And we're getting slugged more and more money because private companies are now building the roads... and then we have to pay a toll to use them.

And it's getting more cutthroat to find a job. I am looking, and for the entire Blue Mountains - in 2001 there were 73,000 people in this area - there are 52 jobs advertised on the net...

Well at least gas is fairly consistant around the country. Its running ~2.50 down here as well. Highest I paid was 3.00 shortly after Katrina hit.

You've got to remember that the population in the States is near the 300 million compared to our 21 million,so they can afford to get their Petrol cheaper.

Transport is pretty horrid in NSW.
The NSW train system is a shambles especially in peak hour, but is cheap compared to driving.
Sydney buses, don't catch them, but not much is said about these services. Most congested roads have a seperate bus lane.
Driving to Sydney during peak hour - All it takes is a minor car accident on a major artirial road or highway and instantly add at least an hour to your travelling time. The current roads would have been great 20 years ago, but today there to congested. Oh yeah, most highways have tolls.

Melbourne isn’t much better. If it rains in the afternoon you can just about guarantee gridlock on nearly every Freeway, Tollway and arterial road.

Cheers, Danny

The use of LPG is a bit more common in the average vehicle down here in Oz then in the US also. LPG is around about half the price of petrol.... so say $1.90US/Gallon.

This currency conversion and litres -> gallons conversions is a little annoying :hihi:

Regarding LPG, has it jumped up anywhere else recently? I've noticed locally that it jumped from 49c to 58c at pretty much every station...

When the price was at about 53.9 locally, I saw Melbourne prices were still in the 30's. I think it hit Vic as a whole, but Melbourne prices dropped back a bit while rural folks get slogged :

53.9? Ouch! It floats between the 38.9 and 41.9 cents per litre mark around here.

Hi xr7.. probably worth noting a couple of things... our octane ratings are different to yours. IIRC your 87 octane is roughly equivalent to our 91 octane. This is considered "regular" undeladed over here. I run 98 octane in my car which is probably 93/94 octane in the USA....

Secondly, we measure economy in litres (<--- this is how we spell litre down under BTW) per 100km. So 20mpg would be about 12L per 100km. FYI, my car averages 20L per 100km in mixed driving, but when the supercharger gets going you're probably looking at 100L/100km (probably something like 3mpg).

Thirdly we pay 38.5cents excise (tax) for every litre of fuel. We also have a goods and service tax of 10% on top of the final cost. And dont the members of this forum like to b!tch about that!

Between hurricane rita and katrina, the most i payed was $1.48/L for 98 octane. 1 aussie dollar worth about 77 us cents... so, about $4.30 US per gallon for high octane...

petrol prices in bendigo are $1.35 pl atm, i dont understand why we pay twice as much as the u.s for fuel....we produce 80% of our own petrol and even if we imported it all its not going to cost twice as much for transport, dam oil companys are just ripping us off, you'd think with the oil we produce from this country we could have the same petrol price as the u.s. dam you john H :( and lmfao at the roosheep, now we can export to nz :P
