had the car serviced by a Ford dealership 3 weeks ago and it seems since the cold weather has been around the engine knocks for 2 secs when you first start the engine in the morning..turn it off and the restart it and its fine...
Or left standing for 2 hours which i tested tonight at 10pm.... (11degrees) ..same thing,..turn of the engine and retart,no probs....... It sounds the same as when you replace the oil filter and the engine knocks till the oil filter fills up, but not as long... My thinking is that the valve in the oil filter is dodgy and the oil is bleeding out of it.. The car has only done 47,000kilo`s.. Cheers |

chances are it's simply oil that's too thin and is draining out of the top of the motor and taking too long to reach the top again when you restart. Do a complete drain and flush and put some 15w40 or such in and see how you go.

Let me guess, they've used a genuine Motorcraft filter?
If they have then that is your problem I reckon, I've always had this issue when using a Motorcraft Z89A or if someone decides that they can fit a Z9. Fitting a purolator filter always fixes this for me.

Most damage done to motors is start up i suggest you replace oil filter as soon as possible.

My Au 1 XR8 has done this on and off for the past 7 years or so, I have used different grades of oil and filters but is still does it. It is obviously an initial oil pressure thing but 80,000k later has not caused any problems. When I start it first thing I just make sure I don't rev it till the oil pressure gauge comes up to normal.

The reason we use the Z89A, is we cant fit a Z9 filter on (well not easily anyway- it fits but bloody tight). Oilcooler sandwich plate takes up half the room.

Just checked the filter and its a AFL 1 MC Motorcraft..I think a Z9 are the same?
Rang up the Ford Dealership and they didnt argue the point about being a filter problem..Going in tommorrow.. Was serviced 3 weeks ago and there was no problems..till 3 days ago when i noticed a slight rubble of lack of oil from the engine only for a sec which i wasnt too worried about..Next day it was worse and last night while over a friends place for only 2 hours it really knocked for 2 secs..Stopped the engine and checked the oil level which was ok. On the way home oil pressure was normal so i figured it must be a faulty valve in the oil filter..The oil they use is pretty thin but ive had no problems till now.. Will see what happens with Javis Ford tomorrow.. |

All fixed.. Javis Ford replaced the oil and the filter..
But this time they used 15w40 oil to replace the 10w40.. I would have not used 10w40 ... I asked if they used 10w40 on the last sevice and the said yes..I dont beleive they did, i ill never know What oil do you guys use??? |

I use 15/50w Motul 300V, Which is a 100% synthetic and overkill for my application. Bought a 20L drum of a mate (supa dupa price) after he discovered wasn't suitable for his flat tappet cam.
When Ive used it all will go back to a 15/40w semi syn. |

I know it's slightly off topic but I'm about to change filters on my AUIII and was wondering if it's even possible to fit a Z9 with the cooler in place- it comes with the shorter one for a reason, surely...
Has anyone successfully fitted a Z9 (or equivalent- VO1, ROF1, OF1SL, HP2004, FL1A) to an 8 with a cooler? Is it difficult ...or difficult |

I was talking to another AU XR8 owner the other day at the shops and asked whether he had ever had the 2 second knock on cold startup.
He said he was advised that if you use a Z9 oil filter to add and extra 500ml of oil. He said since doing that he hasn't had a problem. I added a bit extra oil the other day and so far it seems to work. Worth a thought. I will see how it goes into the future. |

AFL 1 is a Z9 for reference.
15w oil at a minimum in a Wheezer, I used to use Shell Helix and then Penrite and both were very good - never had an issue.
