So as the title says I spent a couple of hours yesterday replacing my upper shock mounts for the IRS, and expecting relief from the dreaded knocking noise that worn mounts create, I went for a drive and lo and behold, knocking continues just as it did, with perhaps the tiniest reduction in noise.
Any advice on what to check next? Cheers

Did you place extra washers under the top shock securing nut?
If so was the ID of the washers large enough to fit over shocker shaft? Cheers Dazza |

Yep, sure did. The job had been done once before (have just clocked 200,000kms) so I just reused the ones that were already on it, and they fill the gap between the mount and the thread.
Cheers

mines done(s2 XR6) 206000 k`s, the only noise i have had is the top shock mounts replaced early this year from memory, if you where to have a squiz at what bushes you can see, and if they are flogged out and knocking it will be fairly obvious i think, some blokes use a tyre lever to pry the suspension this way and that to get any excess movement, grab hold of tie rods and give them a good yank side to side up and down, stabilizer link the same, grab the wheel while it`s safely up in the air(on stands) give it a push pull from different spots see if any play.
personally i would double check the top mounts just in case of something amiss, fold the rear seats forward, pull the carpet and clips out/forward and get the missus to take you for a couple of blockys, and you can sit in the back, watch/listen to make sure it is not the top mounts still rattling, i used this method and it shows up like dogs balls. |

So I went for a drive with the seats down so I could have a look at the mounts, and they are still moving up/down and squeaking. What gives? Is this normal or have I done something wrong when fitting them? They are brand new from a Ford dealership...

Well I added another washer just to be sure and re-tightened all the nuts with extra leverage and no luck. Will have to take it to get all the bushes checked out.
